Dinner Tonight: A Table of Grace in Trying Times
Over these past weeks and months, the doors of Emmanuel Outreach Center have opened again and again to neighbors whose faces tell stories of worry, weariness, and want. They step in hesitantly, clutching lists and wondering if help is possible… and sometimes just hoping there will be enough to feed their children tonight.
This rise in need is not unique to our church walls. In Wayne County, according to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap data (2022), nearly 1 in 10 residents — and approximately 14% of children — live in households that face food insecurity. These are families who do not always know where their next meal will come from. Recent Census data shows that nearly 20% of households with children in our region are single-income , and many of those fall below the federal poverty threshold , which in 2023 was set at $27,750 annual income for a family of four .
Rising costs only deepen the struggle. Food prices in New York rose by more than 20% between 2020 and 2023 , and utility, housing, and transportation costs have all climbed. When you are already at the edge of the budget, these increases mean trade-offs — a smaller grocery basket, skipped meals, or a longer stretch between trips to the store. For some, the choice is between paying a bill or putting food on the table tonight.
Responding with Compassion: The Birth of Dinner Tonight
Seeing this need, Manny and Alice Crespo — faithful stewards of the Free Lunch Program — brought forward a tender vision: Dinner Tonight . This new initiative arose from their encounters with weary neighbors and from their desire that no family should go to bed hungry simply because payday is still two days away.
The Dinner Tonight program offers a nutritional dinner and simple breakfast items , packed with careful thought and prayer. The intent is to ease the immediate ache of hunger and the anxious knot of “what will we do for tomorrow?” These bags act as a bridge — a way to get through a difficult day or night until longer-term help from the Food Closet or other resources can step in.

- Open : Monday through Friday, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
- Location : Emmanuel Outreach Center
- Proof of residency : Not required
- Welcome : All who find themselves in need are warmly invited to come. There are no barriers here — only open arms and a ready table.
No matter the circumstances, no matter if you have never sought help before, you will be met with dignity, compassion, and care . This ministry is about more than food; it is about restoring the peace of mind that comes when a parent knows their children will eat tonight.
Why We Do This
We take our calling from the words of the Prophet Isaiah:
“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.”
— Isaiah 58:10
This is not charity; this is ministry — Christ’s love made visible in bread shared, meals prepared, and burdens lifted. Every bag is a small candle against the darkness of worry, a reminder that hope can sit down at the table with us .
