Emmanuel Outreach Center:
A Newark First UMC Mission
There are stories etched in brick and timber, stories sung in hymn and whispered in prayer — and our story is one of steadfast faith, open hearts, and a courage to change when God calls.
Roots That Run Deep
The people of Emmanuel trace their beginnings back to 1845, when a small congregation was organized in Newark, New York. In 1865, faithful visionaries moved the building of the former Marbletown Christian Church to Newark, creating a home for worship and gathering.

By 1897, the congregation’s hopes had outgrown its walls. The men of the church dismantled the old building, yet saved many of its original bricks, carefully weaving them into a larger, stronger church — a tangible reminder that when we grow, we carry our past with us. Over the decades, distinguished pastors and devoted members shaped a ministry deeply rooted in this community. In 1968, Emmanuel joined the United Methodist Church, adding its voice to a larger connection devoted to loving God and neighbor.
From Worship to Outreach
Our call to serve took a new turn in 1993, when a simple Thanksgiving dinner for the community became the beginning of our Free Lunch Program. That single meal grew into weekly gatherings, and today we serve 100–125 meals every Monday through Friday — a table that never runs out of chairs.
Nearly a decade ago, our doors opened wider when the Newark Food Closet came under our roof. With its rich 49-year history, the Food Closet has flourished here, increasing both the amount of food it provides and the number of families it serves. These partnerships have steadily turned our building from simply a place of worship into a busy, living center of compassion.
Discerning God’s Future
More than six years ago, the people of Emmanuel began a years-long process of prayerful discernment. We asked: What is God calling us to be now? How can we continue to be a purposeful part of Newark while answering the needs right outside our doors?
It was during this time that a sacred door opened — a connection with Newark First United Methodist Church. What began as conversation and hope became a shared vision: to dedicate our entire site at 301 E. Miller Street purely to community ministries. That vision gave birth to Emmanuel Outreach Center (EOC):
A Newark First Mission.
A Partnership in Mission

In joining with Newark First, we have been blessed not only with physical space and resources, but with their hospitality, encouragement, and the energy of a vibrant congregation. Newark First’s willingness to stand with us — offering steadfast support and shared ministry — has strengthened our “small but mighty” vision. Together, our reach is longer, our hands are steadier, and our hearts are fuller.
Living the Dream
In the year since beginning this new chapter, we have seen remarkable growth. Our programs have expanded, our community connections have deepened, and our dreams continue to unfold. From hot lunches to warming stations, from food assistance to the “Wrapped in Warmth” winter wear ministry, EOC’s mission is simple yet profound: to keep our neighbors safe, nourished, and encouraged through the love of Christ.
We invite you to explore this site to learn more about our programs and to meet the dedicated leadership team that shapes our ministry. What began as a congregation in 1845 has become a center of outreach and hope — proof that when we open ourselves to God’s vision, He makes all things new.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” — Isaiah 43:19
Here at Emmanuel Outreach Center, a new thing has indeed sprung up — and by God’s grace, it is flourishing.
Meet the Core Team
The Core Team at Emmanuel Outreach Center is made up of devoted leaders who faithfully oversee the day-to-day running of our programs. With tireless commitment, they work to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our community—ensuring that every person who walks through our doors experiences loving compassion, practical support, and genuine fellowship. Their servant leadership reflects the heart of Christ, who calls us to care for one another. As Scripture reminds us in 1 Peter 4:10:
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
