The Newark Food Closet at Emmanuel Outreach Center
Nearly seven years ago, Emmanuel Outreach Center had the joy of welcoming the Newark Food Closet into our ministry home. This partnership has allowed the Food Closet to expand its inventory, grow its services, and increase its ability to meet the needs of our neighbors in a deeper and more consistent way.
Today, the Newark Food Closet assists over 150 families every month, distributing more than 500 bags of groceries within our community. Their compassion reaches even further through the self-serve Franklin Street food cupboard, which is regularly stocked to ensure that food is available for those who need it most. In addition, the Food Closet helps individuals navigate the process of initiating SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, providing the first steps toward ongoing food security.
The lifeline of this ministry is built on two pillars: Foodlink—our regional food bank partner—and the generous donations from community members, churches, and organizations whose hearts are moved to help feed the hungry.
In recent years, rising housing costs and the soaring price of groceries have pushed many families’ finances to the breaking point. What was once manageable for many has now become a daily struggle. For some, the Food Closet means the difference between going to bed hungry and having a meal to share with their loved ones.
We are reminded of the truth in Proverbs 22:9:
“The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”
As followers of Christ, we are called to be His hands and feet, extending compassion where there is need and offering hope in the form of tangible help. The Newark Food Closet is one way we actively live out this mission.
